What the calendar shows
17 of 25
A big city is not the point.
Most of the top 25 are mid-sized retirement towns, not the largest metros. Raleigh, Surprise, Boynton Beach, and The Villages all clear the field on a steady free calendar, not on size.
AZ · NC · FL · CA
The Sun Belt fills the list.
Arizona, the Carolinas, Florida, and California take 14 of the top 25 spots. Warm-weather retirement markets tend to run year-round outdoor and senior programming, and it shows up in the count.
Score 87
Steady beats a single big week.
Raleigh wins because its free events span 23 different weeks across 9 kinds of activity. A town with one packed festival week scores lower than one with something free on the calendar most weeks.

A published method, so you can check our work.
The Retirement Atlas tracks public events from official city, county, library, parks, and senior-center sources across 383 communities. For this study we kept only the 93 cities that already have a full retirement guide on the site, so the list is recognized retirement destinations rather than every town we happen to scan.
Within each city we counted the events that are both free and still upcoming as of June 17, 2026. The Free Calendar Score is the average of three parts, each scaled against the highest city in the group:
- 1.Volume. How many free upcoming events there are.
- 2.Variety. How many different kinds of activity those free events cover.
- 3.Consistency. How many separate weeks carry at least one free event.
What this is not
This counts what is on the public calendar, not everything happening in a city. Ticketed events, private clubs, and informal meetups are not included, so a low score means a thin free calendar, not a dull town.
Coverage depends on what each city publishes online, and the calendar changes week to week. We refresh the snapshot and date it so the number is always checkable. This is a lifestyle ranking, not financial advice.
